Our Footprint

When you come kayaking with us in the Abel Tasman, you will see that one person having a vision can really make a difference.

Perrine Moncrieff wanted this piece of our kiwi coastline to be protected and preserved for all time, and through her determination she made that vision came to pass, the creation of the Abel Tasman National Park. All of us can make a difference and this is what we do at S.K.C.

We try at the Sea kayak Company to make this very 'green' of activities, kayaking be also surrounded by sustainable practise in the way we manage the business.

The S.K.C team try to save our home, planet earth:

  • Kayaking, a very carbon neutral activity, AND fun
  • Recycle bottles, cans, paper.
  • Compost our organic waste (all that left over carrot cake!)
  • Use that yummy compost in our S.K.C veggie garden
  • Use those yummy veggies and herbs on our kayak trip meals.
  • Buy local, stay local.
  • Minimise the amount of packaging on things we purchase.
  • Use electronic formats rather posting out paper. Saving heaps of trees in the process.
  • Monitor our landfill waste and try and minimise it.
  • Decrease our energy use, using the wind and sun where we can.
  • Educate, understanding creates change
  • Donating to the 'Bird Song Trust'. This is a new venture, which, in partnership with D.O.C to aims to restore biodiversity to the Abel Tasman.
Click here to see the recent bird release.
  • Use our bikes instead of driving. A win in every way.
  • Working towards QualMark Enviro Green certification
  • Planting natives in our S.K.C gardens to give our birds a place to come a feed and play

Obviously if you are the kind of person who wants to come kayaking you are also a forward thinking, environmentally conscious type of individual. So on this page we offer you a way to give back to the environment that you have come to New Zealand to enjoy.

    What can you do!!!!!!!

Here in N.Z we have some special people at www.landcareresearch.co.nz they have created a website called www.carbonzero.co.nz which you can use to calculate the impact of your holiday.

By using their calculator you can work out how much it will cost to cancel out the environmental impact of your holiday.

You can select what you want to pay on their website and the money goes into restoring the environment in several different ways. Look on there website to find out about the different projects that they are involved with.

A fabulous idea which we are happy to endorse is Trees for Travellers

Go to this website... www.treesfortravellers.co.nz. Here you can buy a native tree. Buying a tree means you can have your own carbon sink offsetting CO2 emissions, help in the reintroduction of native birds and prevent habitat erosion. You will receive your tree number and can monitor its growth online.

Sometimes it feels that as an individual it's all too hard and nothing that we do will really matter or change anything But All of us have the 'power of one' and if that is the desire of each of us to make a difference then:

I believe this has the power
    to change the world.

    Join us!

    and the S.K.C team
